Garry Harradence
After a period of nearly 20 years continuous service to the Band, Garry had been forced to think seriously about a reduced role in the Band for the future – a decision he indicated to the Chairman as possibly the hardest decision in his life. Garry came to the Band at a time of transition and great uncertainty. The Band was struggling to retain playing members following several changes in Pipe Majors in quick succession. Being able to learn the pipes in that difficult environment was a true indication of Garry’s love for the instrument and his dedication to the task. The fact that he was also a successful but extremely busy business person also highlights his dedication. During the “dark ages” Garry was a pillar of support for the Band and one of the forces instrumental in the rebuilding of the Band as a successful competing and performing pipe band.
Garry has served on the CoHHPB Board of Management for many years including periods as the Chairman of the Board. As with his playing role, Garry has approached this role with dedication and efficiency. Garry has been forced to take a period of leave to cover business, personal and travel issues. On his return later this year, the Board am confident that Garry’s presence and company will again be enjoyed by the Band.
In summary, Garry is the epitome of a true band member – dedicated, loyal, enthusiastic, diplomatic, and committed to a passion on learning and playing the “Great Highland Bagpipe”.
Garry was awarded life membership of the City of Hobart Highland Pipe Band in April 2011.
