Charles has been a member of the City of Hobart Highland Pipe Band for several decades and during this time, he has been:-

• a member of the Board of Management, holding the position of Treasurer continuously since 1988 and Secretary for a period of time
• a senior piper, with roles of Pipe Sergeant and Pipe Major at various times
• assisting in ensuring the survival of the band when number of playing members were low

Charles was recently acknowledged with a Certificate of Merit for his contribution in 2010/11. During this time, Charles attended more practices than any other band member and was chief organiser of the Band trip to the Ringwood competition.
