About Us
Practice
Band practice is held at Scots Church, 29 Bathurst St Hobart. Main Band Practice is on Wednesday night from 7pm—9pm. This main band practice night consists of general ensemble work on band tunes, parade rehearsals, dress/drill practice, tuition for learner drummers and any administration issues.
Additional practice is held on Monday nights between 7.15pm-9pm. This night is spent by pipers working in small groups on skills practice and tunes suitable for the level of the learner/playing member.
Music
The Band has a broad repertoire of marches, slow airs, strathspeys, jigs, reels and hornpipes (Tune list 2009/10). The Band can perform a combination of Scottish favourites and more contemporary pieces, including some Irish and Australian tunes.
Uniform
The band wears the Brodie Red Modern tartan. The band provides the major uniform items (including a kilt, vest and jacket, tie, sporran, glengarry) for each member, but members are expected to purchase their own shirts, socks/hose and shoes.
A history of Brodie Tartan: the Province of Moray has been the home of the Brodies since the 12th century and Brodie Castle, near Forres, is the home of the chief. In 1645 Lord Lewis Gordon burned the old Brodie house and the family charters and papers were destroyed. It is thus difficult to find much regarding the clan's early history. John of Brodie is said to have assisted the Mackenzies against the MacDonalds at the Battle of Blair-na-Park in 1466, and in 1550 Alexander Brodie and over 100 others were denounced as rebels for attacking Cumming of Altyre. Alexander Brodie of Brodie was a Senator of the College of Justice and Member of Parliament from 1643 to 1649. (Source: Lochcarron of Scotland)
Instruments
Bagpipes
The Band uses the Geoff Ross cannister/bag system, some with clamps and some with zippers. The Band has a substantial asset in its 20 sets of African Blackwood pipes from well known pipe makers Hardie, Henderson, Grainger and Campbell and Lawrie. The Band is currently using Shepherd mark 3 chanters with reeds from Andy Ross (USA).
Drums
The Band primarily uses Premier snare and tenor drums (9 side drums, 3 tenors, 1 alto and 2 bass drums). All fitted with Premier couplings or fittings designed by Gary Webb.
