Dale’s involvement with bagpipes and pipe bands started in 1963 when at the age of 12 he began as a student piper with the then Tasmanian Irish Pipe Band. In the days when it was regular for pipers to emigrate from Scotland, Dale had a number of famous tutors including Wee Donald MacLean (Gold Medalist in all major solo piping competitions), Willie Woods (Foundation Pipe major of World Champion Field Marshall Montgomery Pipe Band) and James Harkin (Graduate of the Pipe Majors School at Edinburgh Castle ). In his time with the Tasmanian Irish Pipe Band, Dale was member of the competition band which competed with success at Grade 2 and Grade 3 including the Band’s final parade and competition performance at the Australian Pipe Band Championships in 1972. With the folding of the Irish Band in 1972, Dale continued piping as a member of the Blue Hackle Society before joining the Derwent Scottish Pipe Band in 1974.

Dale’s involvement with the then Hobart Highland Pipe Band began in 1980 and has continued unabated since that time. In the 28 years that Dale has been a member of the City of Hobart Highland Pipe Band , he has been:-
  • a member of the competition band winning a number of Tasmanian Championships and also competing with distinction at the 1986 Australian Pipe Band Championships in Adelaide .
  • a member of the Board of Management for many years including as Social Secretary, President (mid 1980s), and in more recent times, Custodian.
Dale was awarded life membership of the City of Hobart Highland Pipe Band in December 2008.
